A new intermodal connection offered by Ekol Logistics between Turkey and Spain is based on a service operated by the Danish provider DFDS. The Danish enterprise's ro-ro link forms the basis for the loop through which the Turkish firm Ekol Logistics links the Turkish port of Alsancak, in Izmir, and the Spanish port of Tarragona. The ecological arguments are very convincing. Ahmet Musul, founder and the chairman of the Ekol Logistics board, says the link makes monthly savings of approximately 900 t of carbon and 610,000 litres of diesel. The multimodal solution, comparable to the Turkish firm's existing collaboration with the ports of Trieste and Sete, ensures that goods are shifted from A to B in 60 hours. The fact that Spain simultaneously serves as Ekol's hub for consignments to and from Europe makes the location advantageous for further connections. A loop linking Morocco is currently in the pipeline. In the framework of the firm's network this latest move means that Morocco has received new links to and from Europe, Turkey and the Middle East. Turkey serves as a hub for consignments from the Western Mediterranean region to the Middle East. On this route the company is additionally planning to deliver goods from Turkey to Morocco via Spain in 144 hours. Morocco is Turkey's fifth-largest trading partner in Africa.
