The port of Yokohama (Japan) will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. The port authority has big plans. It wants to boost container handling to 6.3 million teu and raise the total throughput to 150 million t by 2015. The port of Yokohama (Japan) handled 72.8 million t of freight in the first half of this year, almost 1 million t more than during the same months of 2007. Of the total, 45.9 million t was accounted for by international trade and 26.8 million t by domestic traffic. Container handling, at 25.9 million t (1.6 million teu), was just about the same as last year. The number of boxes grew by 2.3% but the tonnage remained unchanged. Total throughput in 2007 reached just under 141.8 million t. Of that, 53 million t consisted of containerised goods. Box handling rose to 3.4 million teu (compared to 3.2 million teu in 2006), a record. The customs authorities put the value of the maritime cargo handled at JPY 11,666 billion (USD 108.4 billion).
