China's CMHI investing in Co- lombo container terminal

China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI), one of the country's largest corporations, is set to invest USD 500 million in the new Colombo South container terminal (CSCT), which will have a capacity of 2.4 million teu. The first phase will be completed by 2013, and the terminal will be fully operational by 2016. The waters in the CSCT will be 18 m deep and the 58 ha facility's three berths will have a total length of 1.2 km. CMHI owns 55% of the relevant joint venture, Aitken Spence 30% and the Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) 15%.
