Shanghai needed only a comparatively short time to overtake its main rival, Singapore, after the latter had only recently moved ahead of Hong Kong. One thing is certain, namely that in terms of volume the Asian ports play in an entirely different league than their European competitors. Shanghai, the world's largest port, achieved a further increase in its container throughput in 2012. According to the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), which manages the hub, the number of boxes that passed through the port was up by 2.5%, from 31.7 to 32.5 million teu. The total volume of goods handled, at 50.2 million t, remained more or less at the previous year's level.
