April saw Europe's airports handle 5.6% more airfreight than in the same month last year. This result means growth was lower than in March; the improvement was nevertheless considered "positive" by the airports association ACI Europe. March's growth of 13.7% had represented the end of a dry spell which had already lasted many years (see also page 13 of ITJ 21-22/2017). Two of the three leading air cargo hubs - in Germany, of all places, the EU's growth engine - registered declines; namely Leipzig, which lost one place in the rankings, and Cologne. "The Easter festivities put the brakes on developments, but May will surely see a renewed rise in the volumes of cargo dispatched by air," the national association ADV opined.
