The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the Chinese cotton fibre HVI properties upon the strength of rotor-spun yarn. Ten varieties of Chinese cotton were selected in the present work. Seven cotton fibre properties were tested with the HVI-900 system. Each of the ten cottons was spun into 58.3 tex, 29.2 tex, 18.2 tex rotor-spun yarns with a ZZFA622 Medium Frequency Rotor Spinner. The count strength product (CSP) and relative strength (RS) of the 28 different yarns were measured with the Skein Tenacity Tester and Uster Tester respectively Based on the linear multiple regression analyses relating HVI fibre properties to the strength of rotor-spun yarn, we found that for rotor-spun yarn, the strength of cotton fibre is the first important factor, then uniformity and micronaire reading. The result may be useful for the manufacturers in guiding their blending work in the mill.
