The tensile strength of yarns and cords composed of cotton fibres is improved by treating them with an aqueous solution of a relatively non-volatile water-soluble abietic acid derivative containing a tricyclic hydroaromatic condensed nucleus, mechanically stretching, washing with hot water and drying. Specified water-soluble abietic acid derivatives are sodium abietate, hydrogenated sodium abietate and abietene sodium sulphate. The temperature of the wash water, preferably of zero hardness, is between 160 DEG F. and 212 DEG F.
