India - 2010/11 sugar production forecast at 24.5 million tonnes

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has cut its sugar production forecast for 2010/11 (Oct/Sep) to 24.5 million tonnes, white value, because of lower-than-expected production in the second-largest producer Uttar Pradesh, according to industry sources. This would bring it in line with the Agriculture Ministry's forecast of 24.5 million tonnes. ISMA had initially projected the country to produce 25.5 million tonnes of sugar this season, which was eventually revised downward to 25.0 million. Mills in Uttar Pradesh have been able to produce only 5.9 million tonnes of sugar by the end of April when crushing stopped, as against an earlier estimate of 6.5 million.
