Life cycle assessment report from Energy Biosciences Institute highlights challenges for policy makers in the biofuels sector

Biofuels from cellulosic feedstocks have been acknowledged as the most promising of possible alternatives to biofuels from simple feedstocks such as sugar and starch. What are termed advanced biofuels such as biobutanol and hydrocarbons can be delivered through existing pipelines and used in today's engines, replacing gasoline on a gallon-for-gallon basis with no loss of performance. Advanced biofuels have the potential to be clean-burning, carbon-neutral and renewable.
