Five years after the sugar industry was closed down in Ireland it is back in the headlines, with growers considering legal action over the loss of production rights and interest growing in re-starting production of both sugar and alcohol for the Irish drinks industry. Legal advice has been sought on whether a case for a restoration of quotas could be made, based on the Mulder milk quota case, where farmers paid to quit the dairy industry successfully sought a right to milk quotas.
