Steam turbine rotor bend: Causes and corrections

During operation, steam turbine rotors usually run with accepted vibration levels within specified limits. Various factors such as design, manufacturing, assembly and operating methods determine the vibration levels for a smooth operation. One of the major manufacturingfactors whichdecides rotor vibration is eccentricity of rotor (mass distribution around the geometrical centre i.e. mismatch between mass centre of gravity and geometrical centre of gravity). This eccentricity is controlled by run out and balancing of rotor.
