Brazil - Cogen units from sugar mills satisfies electrical energy demand of 18.5% of residential customers

In 2020, sugar mills supplied to the country's 18.5% residential customers electrical power exported to the national grid. When all sectors (residential, industrial and commercial) were factored in, cogen power exported represented 5% of the national supply.The sugar mills cogenerated 27,426 gigawatt-hours,enough to serve 11.7 million households. According to data from the National Electric System Operator (ONS), the bulk of electricity is generated by hydroelectric power plants, accounting for 77% of total electricity generation.
