I have occasionally contemplated the question, if I were to be stuck on a desert island, possibly for an unquantified length of time stretching into years, what book would I choose to take with me to while away the time? (British readers will recognise this as a question based on a very long-running BBC radio program.) Clearly a suitable book would have to have both depth and breadth. It should be such that I would not exhaust its insights quickly, and should also repay re-reading. This volume would be a good candidate.
