Adjustable speed drives (ASDs) are popular in motor-control applications with increased system efficiencies and reduced system losses in case of industrial systems. The significant increase in the use of ASDs brings the need for understanding compatibility issues between them and their electrical environment in order to design the electrical systems appropriately. The ac/dc and dc/ac conversion system, frequently used to provide ac voltages with adjustable frequency/magnitude in the ASDs, consists of a voltage source inverter (VSI) fed by a three-phase diode-bridge rectifier, which generates significant amount of line harmonics into the power system and may cause undesired effects on other power system components. A three-phase equivalent circuit model is developed to model adjustable speed drives (ASDs) and also experimental work has been carried out in the Laboratory for power system harmonic analysis by impedance load modelling using Kalman filtering algorithm (KFA). The Experimental results are validated with the simulation results for harmonic analysis and load modelling using KFA. The experimental and simulation results for harmonic analysis of ASDs are presented in this paper.
