This special issue is about the manifold connections between market and happiness. A first radical question arises immediately for any contemporary economist or historian of thought: Why is it that these two concepts are related to one another, when in our culture the market is the realm of the 'dismal science' and happiness is not associated to instrumental or mercantile relationships? In organizing the International Conference on 'Market and Happiness' (June 8-9 2011) at the University of Milano-Bicocca, from which this special issue takes inspiration, we were convinced that the link between these two different words and worlds is not only possible, but also necessary, fertile and inspiring for economics, philosophy, history and social sciences. Why is it so? Some passages of the European modern history are needed in order to try to answer this question. The subject is one that has gradually imposed itself to economists during the last 40 years with its inescapable interdisciplinary implications. It is one of the subjects to which this Journal is devoting close attention.
