This book is a collection of 12 papers that were presented at the 17th annual East Asia Seminar on Economics (EASE) in 2006, sponsors by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and other institutions. The conference was organized around three important and interrelated economic issues-global imbalances, monetary and exchange rate policy, and liberalization-focusing on East Asia and the United States.rnAll of the papers are of high quality, valuable to academic research and provide rich implications for policy decisions. Each paper addresses a timely, well-defined, and intriguing question. Although many topics examined in this book contain puzzling policy issues in international finance, the authors provide lucid intuition on the economic significance of the empirical results. In particular, when the results are not consistent with previous studies, the authors offer insightful explanations.
