Pakistan Railways raises spending to improve safety

Pakistan's Ministry of Railways has pledged to spend Rs 2.6 billion ($US 30.6 million) to improve network safety through implementing a programme of inspections and infrastructure maintenance.rnDespite its limited financial resources, the ministry will focus on replacing 6573km of ageing track and 8305, or 86%, of bridges across its 9027km network. Track rehabilitation from Landhi to Khanpur is underway with the work expected to be completed in 2011, and further maintenance anticipated at various stages on the Khanpur - Lalamusa line.
