Vancouver's elevated ambitions

It is now a quarter of a century since Vancouver demonstrated to the world the cutting edge of transit technology with the Sky Train driverless metro, which was built to coincide with the Expo 86 world fair held in the city. Today the Sky Train network stretches to 68km and is an almost emblematic feature of Vancouver's urban landscape, with its largely-elevated alignment offering passengers sweeping vistas across the city and the mountains to the north. More importantly however it has become the backbone of the public transport system, carrying around 381,000 passengers per day, and ridership is still growing at 2.5-3% per year.
