Funding boost for Helsinki metro

Plans to extend the Helsinki metro network into the city's western suburbs were given a significant boost last month when the European Investment Bank signed a €450m loan agreement with Lansimetro, a development company jointly-owned by the cities of Helsinki and Espoo. Construction began last year on the fully-automated 13.9km line between the existing terminus at Ruoholahti and Matinkyla. The line will open at the end of 2015 and is expected to carry around 100,000 passengers per day. Trains will initially operate at 2.5 minute headways at peak times, although it will be possible to shorten this to 90 seconds.
