How can heavy-haul networks improve friction management?

Managing top of rail (ToR) friction by applying friction modifiers (FMs) is proving increasingly valuable to railways around the world. However, the benefits to heavy-haul operations have not been fully investigated. A team from Central Queensland University's Centre for Railway Engineering and the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Railway Innovation* has developed research methodology to evaluate optimal ToR friction management on Australia's heavy-haul networks which it is preparing for field testing.
