Consortium to build Brenner Base Tunnel

Brenner Basistunnel (BBT), which is responsible for building the 64km €8.8bn tunnel under the Brenner pass between Italy and Austria, has selected a consortium led by Astaldi to build the Italian section at a cost of around €lbn. This involves construction of the exploration tunnel and two running tunnels totalling 23km using traditional tunnelling techniques, and 46km of bored tunnels. The work is expected to take seven years to complete.
