Kaohsiung Underground Railway opens

TAIWAN'S premier, Mr William Lai, minister of transport and communications, Mr Wu Hong-mo, and Railway Bureau director general Mr Allen Hu attended a ceremony on October 14 to mark the opening of a 15.4km underground main line rail link across the city of Kaohsiung. The tunnel from Zuoying to Fongshan replaces Taiwan Railway Administration's (TRA) double-track surface alignment through central Kaohsiung, eliminating numerous level crossings.
