Live-line working would appear to be the ideal way of tackling necessary maintenance, repairs or modifications. The whole system remains in operation while the work is being carried out, so there is no loss of supply. Obviously there is an additional cost. Live-line working is more expensive, as it requires special techniques and equipment, possibly including a helicopter, but above all it needs special staff training and careful preparation. Sometimes, whatever the cost, essential work must be carried out while the line or equipment is still in operation. But it could be argued that if a transmission system is well designed and well operated, and maintenance work is well planned, live-line working should not usually be needed.
