Consideration is given to the selection of reinforcing fibres, polymer matrix materials, and manufacturing methods for the production of continuously reinforced plastic with optimum properties. Particular emphasis is placed on the selection of reinforcing fibres with the appropriate mechanical properties. The authors state that following an analysis of publications on the selection of the components of reinforced thermoplastics and manufacturing methods, it was concluded that incomplete use of the potential of the mechanical properties of reinforcing fibres is due to inadequate allowance for, or simple neglect of, the processing properties of the thermoplastic binders, and that the main focus of attention is compliance with requirements concerning the service properties of the binders in the matrix state. On the basis of this, the aim of the reported investigation was to study the influence of the processing properties of thermoplastic binders on improvement in the realisation of the mechanical properties of reinforcing fibres during the manufacture and processing of reinforced thermoplastics. 21 refs.
