A review is presented in which the advantages afforded by the use of layered silicates in elastomeric nanocomposites, are discussed. Consideration is given to mechanical properties, vulcanisation kinetics, dynamic properties, barrier properties and heat resistance. The performance of nanocomposites based on elastomers with layered silicates is compared to that of polymer-silicate nanocomposites. 17 refs.
