Planning amid crisis and austerity: in, against and beyond the contemporary conjuncture

Austerity has been a dominant political response to the economic crises that erupted in 2007, turning the failures of financial capitalism into an acute crisis of the state (Hall and Massey, 2010). By opportunistically imposing new forms of discipline on public service provision, particularly in economically peripheral locations like Southern Europe, it now seems clear that this has reinforced rather than alleviated the impacts of crisis on national economies (Hadjimichalis, 2011; Blyth, 2013). But ten years after the collapse of Wall Street banks in 2007 and some eight years into the crisis of European sovereign debt: are we now in a position to evaluate how these dynamics are related to planning? And, if so can we really consider the financial crisis a 'turning point' for urban planning and development?
