Many companies and institutions can face a dilemma when considering increasing the number of sensors or equipment on their existing underwater system. Transferring multiple data and video channels on a single cable requires a multiplexer to assimilate a range of information and signals, transfer it up thousands of metres of cable and to split it up again into usable data topside. A large number of systems that handle multi-parameter CTDs, sonar equipment and ROVs operate using copper coax cables. These copper cables can handle a limited amount of data from sonar equipment or from an ROV.
