Marine science and technology (MST) is a highly specialised field which has involvement in a wide range of activities including oceanographic research, oil and gas exploration, renewable energy resources, hydrographic survey, ports and harbour development, environmental monitoring, commercial shipping and military applications. As a result of these diverse markets, in which MST may play a (financially) minor role, it is difficult to obtain a sensible estimate of market size and activity from any of the currently available economic indicators.
