Carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) concentrations in the oceans are of high academic and industrial relevance. They are key parameters for addressing many scientific questions as well as offshore applications. Extensive greenhouse gas datasets are important for reliable climate modelling and the measurement of dissolved CO2 is in transition to become a parameter to be continuously monitored by national environmental authorities rather than by marine chemists. 'Point measurements' of CO_2 and CH4 help to understand the underlying processes of carbon cycling or form the basis for countermeasures during subsea structure inspection missions. Ocean acidification, natural gas seepage, carbon capture and storage (CCS), as well as pipeline monitoring, are additional examples of the numerous fields of applications.
