Terry Sloane is co- owner and managing director of Planet Ocean Ltd. Based in Surrey, UK, Planet Ocean represents manufacturers of oceanographic and meteorological instruments from around the world, as well as designing and manufacturing bespoke instruments and systems for ocean research How would you describe yourself in three words? Husband, father, human. What was your first Job in the industry? I was a student apprentice at Marconi Space & Defence Systems and, after college, started as a trials engineer within Naval Division, spending a lot of time at BUTEC (British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre), on the west coast of Scotland, playing with torpedoes and submarines and learning how to fillet a mackerel. Being a student apprentice combining college and on the job learning was a deliberate choice. Marconi was at the cutting edge of micro electronics design and part of the five-year training was to experience every department within the company, including all the main design labs, PCB production, the drawing office, the machine shop, QA, calibration, project planning, accounting, computing and marketing; great groundwork for the future.
