Next Generation Combat Vehicle Family. The Next Generation Combat Vehicle started out as a conceptual replacement for the Bradley vehicle, but the moniker now covers a variety of vehicle programs: the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (Bradley replacement), the Robotic Combat Vehicle, the Armored Multipurpose Vehicle (Ml 13 replacement), and the Mobile Protected Firepower light tank. The AMPV and MPF tank were pulled under the NGCV umbrella in late 2018. These programs are discussed individually below. Armored Multipurpose Vehicle (AMPV). The Army currently plans to buy some 2,897 AMPVs from BAE Systems to replace aging M113 armored personnel carriers, but the Army may expand the scope of the program. The current plan comprises five variants: general-purpose (520), mission command (991), mortar carrier (384), medical evacuation (788), and medical treatment (214). The Army will spend nearly $1 billion on research and development, and another $12.9 billion procuring the vehicles. In December 2014, BAE Systems was awarded a 52-month engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) contract for 29 prototype vehicles across all five mission variants. The contract is valued at $382.6 million, but includes an option to begin low-rate production of 289 vehicles, bringing its potential value to $1.2 billion. BAE's vehicle is based on a turretless version of the Bradley vehicle.
