This volume addresses female imaginaries of the Latin American city. It contains thirteen essays that review a variety of literary products - novels, testimonials and short stories - from the nineteenth century until today. The essays describe how, in fiction, women from elite and marginalized groups experience and negotiate Latin American urban space in daily life. The essays are preceded by an introductory chapter and grouped in four themes: the spatialization of power; dynamics and meta-travels; marginalization and contestation; and translocal connections. There is no concluding chapter. The book is said to respond to an omission in Latin American studies regarding the impact of the city on women's lives as described by women fiction writers. The essayists, through whose descriptions we become acquainted with the fictional literature, are nine women and four men from the field of language and literature studies. The title refers to a quote from the Chilean writer Diamela Eltit. It suggests that we 'work the folds of the city' (p. v), to reveal 'possible' places and hidden experiences.
