This collection of articles is the product of a conference on world city networks held at Ghent University in 2005. The editors are all affiliated with the GaWC (Globalization and World Cities) group, which has long been dedicated to world city network research. The book is intended to be the second benchmark in world city studies a decade after the publication of World Cities in a World-System (Knox and Taylor, 1995). The 1995 collection had a stronger focus on US cities and covered a wide range of topics on the broader cultural, political and economic processes of world city formation. By comparison, this 2007 collection is more focused on European urban systems and concentrates the discussion on methodological and conceptual issues within world city network studies, as well as on the implications on policies and practices. It has been more than two decades since the publication of John' Friedmann's 'The World City Hypothesis'. For readers interested in learning about what progress has been made and where the field stands now, Cities in Globalization provides a selection of state-of-the-art scholarship on the subject.
