Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places

Among urban scholars today, the sociologist Sharon Zukin stands out for the originality of her interpretations and for being the first as well as the major figure to move contemporary urban studies in the direction of accounting for culture and the work of cultural entrepreneurs, such as artists and those who own their showcase galleries. She has written a number of notable works that highlight these themes. Her first book, Loft Living (1989), on the gentriflcation of SoHo in New York City, helped to reveal how the old industrial city was remade in the latter part of the twentieth century. Zukin portrayed artists and their galleries as an engine of this new cultural growth and laid the foundations for more recent work on the so-called creative class.
