Metroburbia USA is not merely a book about recent urbanization in the US; it is first of all a sensitive registration of the socio-spatial dialectic under current conditions. The major social transformations the country has experienced over the past few decades are gradually being translated from ideas and manifest social relations into the built environment: a well-known series of changes, often summarized as 'deindustrialization', accelerated from the 1960s and effectively undermined what were considered stable structures of modern civilization — namely, equality, well-paid and safe jobs for the vast majority of workers, rising welfare, state control over the wider economy, and so on.
