How it Works: Recovering Citizens in Post-Welfare Philadelphia

How it Works is an ethnographic account of the recovery house industry that has sprung up in the abandoned rowhouses of postindustrial Philadelphia. Recovery houses are frequently started and operated by recovering addicts, and are geared towards providing housing and a structure within which addicts on General Assistance (GA) and other forms of welfare may pursue sobriety.
