摘要

Global cities are being reshaped by twin forces: a new mode of economic security that privileges growth over collective welfare and crime prevention strategies that divide urban spaces between a privileged and an underprivileged class. While both of these forces are connected to global economic patterns, research has not fully explored their global reach and diverse instantiations. As the world's urban population shifts from the Global North to the South, research on urban segregation and crime must follow the same path. In this vein, Samara provides us with a rich and compelling account of post-Apartheid Cape Town, accounting for the diverse ways in which a 'city of walls' (Caldeira, 2000) has emerged in this important African business and tourism hub.
