Deuteronomy, Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible

The Brazos Theological Commentary on the Bible has seen a number of additions in the last year or so. Notable among them is this commentary on the book of Deuteronomy, written by Telford Work of Westmont College. As the series preface says, these volumes are exploratory and therefore vary quite a bit with respect to their style, format and method. Sure enough, Work's book takes a tack unlike any previous entry: he systematically employs a four-fold reading of Scripture in his task to 'form and discipline a continuing apostolic imagination by reading every passage of Deuteronomy according to the sensibilities of the New Testament church' (p. 18). The commentary is divided into four sections: the plain sense, the allegorical sense (dealing with matters of faith), the anagogical sense (dealing with matters of eschatological hope) and the tropological sense (dealing with matters of love in and by the church).
