Wind derived products using INSAT-3D atmospheric motion vectors and its meteorological applications

In the present study, a procedure has been developed by adopting Cressman objective analysis scheme for estimating different atmospheric products using Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) retrieved from Indian Geostationary Satellite INSAT-3D over land and sea at every half-hour interval. These products are: (i) Atmospheric Vorticity at 200 hPa, 500 hPa, 700 hPa and 850 hPa levels, (ii) Upper-level Atmospheric Divergence, (iii) Lower-level Atmospheric Convergence, (iv) Deep-layer vertical wind shear, (v) Mid-level vertical wind shear and (vi) 24 hour wind shear tendency. These products are retrieved over the same domain where AMVs are retrieved, i.e. in the region 50 degrees N to 50 degrees S, 30 degrees E to 130 degrees E. The preliminary validation of AMVs and derived products are carried out using wind data obtained from the weather prediction model analysis. Along with operational AMVs, these derived products are also useful for many meteorological applications. These derived products are very important during the formation, intensification and decay of Tropical Cyclones (TCs), to characterize the convective environment in case of strong updraught. In this study, two case studies related to TCs are also explored for demonstrating the applications of these products.
