Crime victimisation: a study into the profile of homicide victims in Istanbul

This study attempts to explore the characteristics of homicide victimisation and the nature of homicide victims in Istanbul between 1996 and 2000. The purpose of the study is twofold. First, to draw a profile of the victim of homicide incidents. Second, to establish a homicide data set for researchers to use. Using data provided from the Homicide Bureau of Istanbul Police Department as a major database, 578 homicide cases have been examined. The findings of this research show that males predominate as victims. Homicide victimisations are more likely to occur in 'not visible' locations. Firearms are the overwhelming choice as a murder weapon. The reasons for homicide incidents are mostly disputes, domestic quarrels, and disputes over money.
