In Maintaining three languages: The teenage years (parents' and teachers' guides), Xiao-lei Wang takes readers, parents of multilingual children, along on the linguistic journey of her sons, Leandre and Dominique, who have acquired two heritage languages, Chinese and French, along with dominant languages in the United States, English and Spanish, through their adolescent years. Readers learn about not only the development of the two heritage languages with regard to sound system, vocabulary, sentence structure, and literacy as demonstrated in chapters 3 through 7, but also different identities that they have formed around the languages with English being a neutral, Chinese a moral, and French an emotional core language as described in chapter 8. Readers will unquestionably find it joyful to bask in the two young men's expanding linguistic prowess, curiosity, and flexibility in this book.
