摘要

The HIV epidemic continues to pose enormous challenges in the United States both for the communities affected and for health care professionals who serve those communities. Health care providers are being asked to find innovative ways to improve the quality of care delivered to HIV patients. HIT is one method providers can use to better coordinate and monitor health care services and, ultimately, improve the health outcomes of the HIV-positive clients they serve. In 2004, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a document outlining a 10-year plan to develop a national electronic health information infrastructure in the United States. In 2005, the Department's National Coordinator of Health Information Technology was established. The coordinator's principal task is to define the requirements and standards for an interoperable, nationwide health information network.
