'Real' Insider Threat: Toxic Workplace Behavior in the Intelligence Community

This article has explored how TWB might manifest itself within and impact IC teams. Even if the scope of research is limited to a narrow frame around analysis and support to production, the community's institutional expanse, structural complexities, and interactive cultural environments present challenges to the development of a cohesive framework for understanding TWB in the IC context. However, when the phenomenon is explored through the prism of teams and how groups of individuals collaborate (or fail to collaborate), TWB becomes easier to generalize across a range of contexts. Software developers may hit each other. Analysts may stop speaking. In either setting, the focus on destructive relationships distracts attention and energy away from the mission.
