Examining the worlds of fictional spies-whether those spies appear in novels, films, or television-can be done for varied reasons. Public perceptions of what the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) or other agencies do, can do, or don't do, can be shaped by that fictional world. Even the perceptions of congressional staffers can be influenced by those works. Thus, in late October 1975, Robert Gambino, the CIA's Director of Security, prepared a memorandum for the record concerning his conversation with a staff member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence. He reported that she asked about the "CIA within the CIA." According to Gambino, she stated that "everyone knew about the 'CIA within the CIA' revealed in the movie Three Days of the Condor."
