The proposition that something about Cambridge encourages its graduates to adopt espionage as a career, often for the wrong side, seems to be borne out by the evidence of Christopher Marlowe, Francis Walsingham and, most notoriously, the Cold War treachery of Alan Nunn May, Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, John Cairncross, and Leo Long. When asked in August 2013 by the Cambridge News whether a similar Oxford spy-ring existed, Christopher Catherwood replied, "I did ask why there are no Oxford spies. There's only one that we know of, and he wasn't exactly prominent.
