ON ACKOFF'S 'MANAGEMENT MISINFORMATION SYSTEMS'

Context is everything. This is as true for academic writing as it is of management itself. When Russell Ackoff published his now seminal article in 1967 the abiding values within the broad fields of management science and of systems analysis and design were largely positivist and deterministic. Ackoff had already publ ished two major contributions with West Churchman on methods of inquiry (1950) and operations research (1957) and in 1962 published the single authored text on the scientific method with a focus on optimising applied research decisions.
