Rural Face and Sustainable Urban Liveability

摘要

The present research investigates the significance of ‘rural face' from the lens of liveability and analyses what urban theorists can learn from this concept to overcome the unsustainability crisis of the present urban paradigm. Rural face attributes are discussed in terms of tangible (ecological and economical) and intangible (social) dimensions and linked to the sustainability principles they entail. The rustic environment, practices, livelihood, folklore, and culture are examined using the example of rural areas in Pakistan. This research concludes that for urban sustainability to become a reality it needs to assimilate attributes of rural face into the city realm and prompts rethinking the rural-urban relationship from a different perspective.
