摘要

The variety of communication media available for personal communication has increased markedly in the last decade and new ones continue to appear. The purpose of this book is to provide a means of thinking critically about the roles of digital media, in particular the Internet and the mobile phone, in personal relationships. The author, an Associate Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Kansas in the USA, is well placed to undertake this task as she began paying attention to them in 1990, launched a research project into interpersonal communication over the Internet in 1991, and began teaching courses in communication and new technology in 1994.
