A variation of the Forrestal-Warren analytical perforation model has allowed for a more precise prediction of the V-50 or V-bl, defined as the velocity at which only 50% of the projectiles perforate the target, for a range of armour steels: ARMOX 500S, UHH (Ultra High Hardness) Armour and HHA (High Hardness armour), in addition to Ti-6Al-4V and AA5083-H116. The incorporation of the ballistic merit, a materials strength/energy based metric, into the original formulation has improved the predictions of all the steel grades and offers a rapid and accurate assessment framework with a reduced absolute error margin against the experimentally derived V-bl results. This can allow for rapid assessment, with respect to lengthier FE simulations, and for greater correlation with the experimental testing
