Adb Backs Song Bung 4 Scheme In Vietnam

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide Vietnam with a US$ 196 million loan to build the Song Bung 4 hydro plant in the Vu Gia-Thu Bon river basin of the central province of Quang Nam. The 156 MW project, which is located in one of the poorest and most remote parts of central Vietnam, will be the country's first major dam project to be finance by a multilateral development agency. An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on 6-October by the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, Nguyen Van Giau, and the ADB director for Vietnam, Ayumi Konishi. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin later this year and be completed by 2013. In addition to the ADB loan, the Viet Nam Development Bank will lend US$ 22.3 million and the state utility Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) will contribute US$ 49 million of the total estimated project cost of US$ 265.9 million.
